10 Tips to Choosing the Right Locksmith

Locks can cause trouble any time of year, day or night. Before you call for help, here are some things you should know about hiring a locksmith.

  1. Know Who You’re Dealing With
2 a.m. on a cold winter’s night is no time to shop for a locksmith, let alone admit a stranger into your home or business. Plan ahead. Take a few minutes to research what locksmiths serve your area routinely. Write down their contact information and keep it in your wallet or phone contacts so that you’ve already chosen a locksmith by the time you need one.
  1. Check Their Reputation
It’s easy to check business ratings and reviews on the internet. Endorsements by the Better Business Bureau and sites like Angie’s List and Home Advisor should be an indication that they are reputable.
  1. Check Their Service Area and Hours
Be sure you won’t be charged extra for out-of-area or off-hours service calls.
  1. Ask If They’re Bonded and Insured
Colorado doesn’t require locksmiths to be licensed, so ask for proof that the company is bonded and insured.
  1. Pay Attention to What They Say
Evasive or unsatisfactory answers to any of your questions should be cause for concern. Hold them to what they say, and be cautious if they tell you the lock will have to be drilled out. Professional locksmiths hardly ever need to do that.
  1. Ask About Total Charges
Some services will quote a low cost for their work but add extra charges for mileage, parts, or emergency and after-hours service. Others may have so-called “call charges” or minimums. Get the full cost before hiring them.
  1. Know Your Payment Options
Established businesses will have multiple options for paying. Find out what they are ahead of time so you can be prepared.
  1. Ask For a Written Estimate
A reputable firm will gladly provide a written estimate before starting work. Unforeseen circumstances can occur on any job, but the technician should know how likely they might be and let you know up front. If the on-site estimate varies greatly from the phone quote, don’t be pressured into overpaying.
  1. Ask For Identification
Reputable locksmiths should arrive in a marked van and be wearing clothing with the company name on it. Be wary and always ask for identification. You might also want to jot down the license plate number of the vehicle they arrive in.
  2. Don’t Pay Until You’re Satisfied
Professionals will not normally ask for payment in advance under normal circumstances. Make sure you know the company’s payment policy in advance. Use a credit card if possible in case there’s a dispute.
